Romanian Films at Toronto

Aiming for, as our subtitle suggests, an “alternative view” to other end-of-decade polls, we surveyed a deluxe panel of over sixty film curators, historians, archivists, and programmers largely from international institutions akin to TIFF Cinematheque, professionals who see hundreds of films a year, attend many international festivals, sit on juries, curate cinema in a historical context, write books, essays, and polemics on cinema, and generally spend much of their time thinking, writing, reading, and arguing about film.

  • Another Romanian film is screening these days at the Royal Cinema, until January 21st – Police, Adjective. I haven’t seen this one yet but I read good things about it, including a recent Globe and Mail review.
  • The Third Annual Toronto-Romanian Film Festival is taking place at the Innis Hall, at the Bloor Cinema and at the ROM from February 4th to the 7th.

Curated by the ToRo Arts Group (with the support of, and in collaboration with, the Romanian Cultural Institute) and scheduled to transpire between February 4th and 7th, 2010, the Third Annual Toronto-Romanian Film Festival will explore the intricacies, modes and relational realities of adaptation, as they manifest themselves socially, politically and economically. So as to provide a focused introduction to the aforementioned, a Panel Discussion, preceded by the screening of French-produced La Nouvelle Vague Roumaine and moderated by Calin-Andrei Mihailescu, a Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Western Ontario, will transpire on February 4th; this event will be held at the Royal Ontario Museum.
